Over winter break we’re sure you’ve got so much planned to do with your family, and it may be easy to push aside academics for a while. However, it’s essential to remember that your child is going to have to go back to school in January, and a month away from school work can really have an effect on his or her academic success. Therefore, we suggest you continue academic pursuits over the break. Don’t fear, The Tutoring Center in Ocoee would like to suggest ways in which you can make those pursuits fun.
Your child can help you create your grocery list for the items you’ll need to make those delicious winter meals. Tell your child what you need and have him or her practice writing those things down.
If your child gets gifts during this season, you could help him or her practice some writing, as well as gratitude, with thank you cards.
If you have a favorite holiday book or series that you think your child will enjoy, take turns reading and being read to. You could read ‘The Night Before Christmas’ or another holiday classic. Remember to put into practice some of the 11 reading comprehension strategies
if you choose to have your child read to you.
You can also have your child help you read out the ingredients for holiday menu items.
A fun way to get your child to practice some math is by having him or her help you with measurements for recipes. As there will likely be much to cook, your child will benefit from plenty of opportunities to assist you in this way.
These are simple suggestions, but your child will likely appreciate that you are helping them practice learning while at the same time incorporating excitement to the process. On the other hand, they may not even notice they are learning.
You can also take advantage of these fun learning activities to see where your child’s strengths and weaknesses lie. If you find that there is an area where your child is struggling, The Tutoring Center is well equipped to help your child get on the right track.
