Students look forward to summer break every year because it usually means lots of free time, vacation and no school. Even though your child is looking forward to time away from the classroom, it is important that their summer fun is complemented with engaging educational activities. The Tutoring Center of Ocoee would like to share some reasons why it is so important to avoid the summer “brain drain.”
Keeping a study routine over the summer makes your child’s transition back to school a lot smoother. While most teachers have to spend about four weeks reteaching students information they learned the previous year but lost over summer break, your child will be prepared to move onto new material. The retention of old material and its use over the summer will give your child a great base to build upon as they learn new skills.
Time to improve
Every student has their strengths and weaknesses and the summer months provide the perfect space and time to really focus on the weaknesses. Look back on your child’s performance over the school year and choose the areas that could use improvement. Talk to your child’s teacher to get a better assessment of what areas should be focused on. Working on these areas will not only ensure your child is more prepared when school starts up again, but your child will also be more confident in their abilities.
Back to school
Making sure your child keeps in the habit of studying will ensure their transition back to school in the fall will be easier. Give your child assignments complete with deadlines in order to ensure your child doesn’t lose the habit of completing homework assignments. It is just as important that they hold onto study habits and even improve them. Through practice, they will be better prepared for the school year once summer comes to a close.
